Florida woman's kids turn in mom for allegedly being drunk

According to law enforcement officers with the Melbourne Police Department, a 41-year-old Rockledge woman was taken into custody on Halloween after her kids tried to get help for her because she was allegedly drunk. The incident happened in the parking lot of a strip mall located on North Wickham Road.

Police reported that they responded to a call about a 12-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl who reportedly asked for someone to help their mother who was 'drunk'. After responding, police stated that they found the woman in the parking lot behind the wheel of her car with the engine running.

Officers reported that the woman had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and smelled like alcohol. They claimed that she had to lean on her car after she got out of it in order to maintain her balance. The woman reportedly refused to take a breathalyzer test or to undergo field sobriety tests. She was taken into custody and booked into the Brevard County Jail on a $7,500 bond. Police said that the woman has had two previous arrests for DUI and has a suspended license.

The penalties for drunk driving convictions may be especially severe when people have had multiple offenses. People who are facing these types of charges might want to get help from a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. An attorney who is experienced with handling DUI cases might find flaws with how the traffic stop was performed and may review police dash cams to try to see if the police reports are inconsistent. In some cases, a challenge can be made to the calibration of the machine used to conduct the breath test.
