Two arrested for possession of guns and drugs

A minor traffic violation was the catalyst for a major arrest that included illegal drugs, ammunition and a loaded AR-15 according to the Leon County Sheriff's Office. This arrest was at the 3900 block of Roberts Avenue in Tallahassee, Florida, at approximately 4 a.m.

According to the police report, a blue Nisan Altima with two individuals inside was spotted running a stop sign by a deputy on patrol. The deputy began to follow the suspect vehicle which he claims illegally passed another vehicle before turning off onto a side street. The deputy pulled the suspect over and had the driver and passenger step out of the vehicle after he said he smelled the odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up marijuana, cocaine, a loaded AR-15, a loaded pistol and additional ammunition. Both suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Leon County Detention Facility.

The driver was interviewed by law enforcement but denied any knowledge of the contraband in his vehicle. However, when the driver was searched, officers claimed they discovered four small bags of methamphetamine. Both individuals were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying an unlicensed concealed weapon and possession of narcotic equipment. The driver faced additional charges related to smuggling the methamphetamine into the detention center and carrying the unlicensed pistol. The passenger was also charged with resisting arrest without violence.

The combination of illegal drugs and firearms can lead to criminal charges that carry stiff consequences. An individual who is facing felony drug charges should contact an attorney immediately. An attorney with experience in criminal defense law may be able to help that individual navigate the criminal justice process. Attorneys may be able to use their knowledge of local sentencing standards to negotiate a favorable plea bargain.
